UN’s Sustainable Development Goals: making our work meaningful

Climate change continues to exacerbate natural disasters, with devastating impacts on communities worldwide. According to the UN, climate-related disasters have increased fivefold over the past 50 years. In 2023 alone, over 20 million people were displaced due to weather-related events.

The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) remind us to think bigger: climate change also has a significant impact on international security and peace. At Intersec, we take these SDGs very seriously. Whether it’s making cities safer (SDG 11), addressing climate-related risks (SDG 13), or fostering peace through advanced technology (SDG 16), our network-based technology solutions are designed with impact in mind: deliver robust mission-critical communications. And by forging strong partnerships (SDG 17), we’re proving that together, we can achieve a safer future.

#ClimateTech – Disaster resilience : a recurring theme

Early warning systems are found in 4 SDGs. The role of data and warning systems serves to detect risks upstream, mitigate impacts, and manage crises when an incident has occurred. Better equipping public authorities and more effectively informing populations is a major public safety issue.

  • SDG 1: No poverty: SDG 1.5: "By 2030, build the resilience of the poor and those in vulnerable situations and reduce their exposure and vulnerability to climate-related extreme events and other economic, social and environmental shocks and disasters”

  • SGD 3: Good health and well-being: SDG 3.d: "Strengthen the capacity of all countries, in particular developing countries, for early warning, risk reduction and management of national and global health risks"

  • SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities: SDG 11.b: "By 2020, substantially increase the number of cities and human settlements adopting and implementing integrated policies and plans towards inclusion, resource efficiency, mitigation and adaptation to climate change, resilience to disasters, and develop and implement holistic disaster risk management at all levels".

  • SDG 13: Climate action: SDG 13.1: "Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries”

By processing location-specific data and offering live monitoring of a territory's exposure to hazards, and by combining cell broadcast and location-based SMS technology to reach everyone at risk in an endangered area, our solutions help public authorities and mission-critical organizations protect 400 million people around the world. We aim to accelerate the adoption of mobile EWS, especially in disaster-prone countries, and have recently made a pledge to ITU's Partner2Connect Coalition on this matter.

#PeaceTech - International cooperation: technology to foster peace

In 2023, 49,000 individuals were identified as victims of human trafficking, and over 100 million people were forcibly displaced due to conflict. These figures highlight the urgent need for robust tools to support law enforcement and public institutions in protecting citizens and upholding justice.

Meaningful progress requires collective effort. At Intersec, we are committed to building partnerships with governments, telecom operators, and other stakeholders to leverage technology for people’s safety, especially in developing countries.

  • SDG 16: Peace, justice and strong institutions: SDG 16.a: “Strengthen relevant national institutions, including through international cooperation, for building capacity at all levels, in particular in developing countries, to prevent violence and combat terrorism and crime

  • SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals: SDG 17.16: “Enhance the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development, complemented by multi-stakeholder partnerships that mobilize and share knowledge, expertise, technology and financial resources, to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in all countries, in particular developing countries”

Our technology plays a role in achieving this target. The use of AI-driven metadata analysis empowers investigators and home affairs to combat organized crime, trafficking, terrorism, and fraud while adhering to rigorous privacy and ethical standards.
