Paris Nation Square refurbishment: done!

Big data for urban transformation - In 2016, Intersec conducted a study by leveraging the location data retrieved from Wi-fi access points installed on Place de la Nation in Paris. Today, the first conclusive tests are successful, and the transformation of the Square should start in 2018.

For the Paris City Council and in partnership with Cisco, Intersec analysed for 4 weeks all data coming from dozens of Wi-Fi access points installed on and around the square. A full-scale test phase is still underway to ensure that the future chosen development is the right one:

- Reduction of tracks by concrete blocks
- Vegetation increased on central ring
- Development of pedestrian zones and cycle paths
- Temporary bus stops

Since the beginning of this simulation, we do not notice significant difficulties and this configuration increases by 57% the space for pedestrians, without causing any traffic jam!

The data collection has led to a refurbishing simulation that looks successful

Data analytics allowed the City Council to choose the best option among the various scenarios they were considering. These data represented about 1 million events per day and were enriched with other information
such as air quality, sound volume, etc. By collecting and analysing this massive amount of data, Intersec has made it possible to opt for a solution that satisfies residents, visitors, workers, as well as drivers and cyclists.This simulation should lead to the construction phase which will begin in mid-2018.

Why collecting data before refurbishment start?
The processing of these data has enabled the City Council to accurately measure the number of visitors on the
square, identify the most frequented routes be it by pedestrians or by cars, quantify the visit duration on the
square by time slot, etc.

An easily replicable project
This tactical urbanism experience is very important for Intersec as it contributes to better living conditions while easily replicable for any Smart City project in shopping malls, transportation hubs, business centres, stadiums...
